Our coalition is largely based on the guerilla style approach to advocacy, though there are definitely exceptions to this – We work very closely with certain city organizations, including the Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Committee and the City Health Department.

It’s very easy to be a member of the JBC. There are absolutely no fees (at this time, anyway, so lucky you for getting in scotfree while you still can!), but there are some very doable dues. The minimum requirement to be a JBC member is to:

  1. volunteer at least every 90 days, OR
  2. attend at least 1 JBC Brainstorm per month, OR
  3. already currently work to improve the city for cyclists in some way, such as working for FDOT and installing sharrows, or representing injured cyclists, and work of that nature, OR
  4. participate in BPAC meetings, OR
  5. attend specific City Hall hearings that affect our community and write letters to our City Council as needed, OR
  6. take your own initiative and actively pursue your own bike and pedestrian efforts, which could also include simply organizing, or helping to organize, bike events within the city  – technically not advocacy per se, but organizing bike events helps build the bike community, and we LOVE that.
  7. OR, heck, if ya don’t have the time to do any of that, donating money or materials to the cause counts too!

I figure if fraternities have a minimum requirement to be a part of their organization, then a serious entity in advocacy, such as ourselves, should as well.

We’ve got our work cut out for us here in this great big city, but many hands make for light work. Most of the volunteer work is easy peasy, social, and really fun.

So don’t be shy. All are welcome!

    Jax needs safer streets.
Aerobic Walking needs to be encouraged for exercise especially for our seniors; there should be as many exercise walkers as there are joggers/runners/bikers. More safe sidewalks are needed.
Link above to coj.net not working as of 11 10 15.
JTA bus stop sites need to be made safe for citizens of all ages, and especially for families with young children.
Cycling at high speeds is inherently dangerous.
    Keep up the good work.
