Friday, September 21st // PARK(ING) DAY IN DOWNTOWN JAX

Ya might wanna RIDE BIKES to this one, folks. You’re gonna have a heckuva time finding a parking spot for your gas guzzler.

10:00 am to 5:00 pm in Downtown Jax.

On Friday, September 21, in celebration of PARK(ing) Day, a collaboration between Downtown Vision, Inc., City of Jacksonville, Transform Jax and the Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville will allow for parking spots in downtown Jacksonville to be transformed into temporary public spaces by anyone and open to everyone.

PARK(ing) Day provides a temporary public open space . . . one parking spot at at time.

PARK(ing) Day is a annual open-source global event where citizens, artists and activists collaborate to temporarily transform metered parking spaces into “PARK(ing)” spaces: temporary public places. The project began in 2005 when Rebar, a San Francisco art and design studio, converted a single metered parking space into a temporary public park in downtown San Francisco. Since 2005, PARK(ing) Day has evolved into a global movement, with organizations and individuals (operating independently of Rebar but following an established set of guidelines) creating new forms of temporary public space in urban contexts around the world.

The mission of PARK(ing) Day is to call attention to the need for more urban open space, to generate critical debate around how public space is created and allocated, and to improve the quality of urban human habitat…at least until the meter runs out!

Thursday, September 27th // CYCLOCROSS AT BOONE PARK IN RIVERSIDE

Tuesday, October 2nd // TuNiRiSiBiRi AKA TUESDAY NIGHT RIVERSIDE BIKE RIDE

9:00 pm at Memorial Park. Launch at 10:00 pm.

It’s that time again for the Riverside version of everyone’s favorite weekly bike ride… this time in Riverside!

Last year we had 108 people help us take over the streets. 108! That’s a TuNiBiRi record! I have a sneaky suspicion that we will top that number this time around.

We will still meet up at 9pm and ride at 10pm but we are gathering at Memorial Park instead of ZenCog.

Front and rear blinkies are required. This is a “ride at your own risk” event.

Saturday, October 6th // COMMUNITY FIRST SATURDAYS, EVERY FIRST SATURDAY OF THE MONTH

9:00 am till ???

Free historic bike tours by e2Ride Bike Tours! (bring your own bike, helmet, water, and snacks! HELMETS ARE MANDATORY.)

The JAX Chamber and Community First Credit Union are debuting a new monthly event Downtown October 6, 2012 called Community First Saturdays. The event itself is a new monthly project to activate our beautiful River and Riverwalk, tie into events and activities Downtown, create family and fitness content that compels our community to gather on the St. Johns River, and simply enjoy our sometimes underrated quality of life in Jacksonville.

There are two central locations of Community First Saturdays:

One is on the Riverwalk behind the Times Union Center (between the two green gazebos at the south ends of Hogan and Pearl Sts). This space, dubbed Community West, will feature family friendly interactive activities, fitness classes, and excursion ideas and tours of our vibrant Downtown. Linking the biggest weekly outdoor cultural event in Florida (Riverside Arts Market) with the Riverwalk and Downtown is a priority of CFS so you’ll see many linkages both physical and programmatic. There is too much to mention in this space but there will be things like free Wi-Fi, bike valet, and we’ve got the JTA Skyway running! Kids can now enjoy our special Community First Saturday Skyway service! Its free and connects to awesome Downtown destinations like Friendship Fountain, MOSH, MOCA Jax, and our excellent Downtown library!

The other Community First Saturdays location is Community East, which will be in the old courthouse parking lot. This space will be where we feature Food vendors/Trucks, a bar, DJs, and café tables and chairs and umbrellas on the Riverwalk. Community East is a natural cap to the east end of the Riverwalk, and will be more about lounging, socializing, and gathering and making/meeting friends.

We expect Community First Saturdays to be robust with good crowds each month that will grow as the event becomes more mature. Please join the event’s facebook at www.facebook.com/communityfirstsaturdays and follow us at www.twitter.com/community1stsat

We’ll also be announcing many activities and schedules at our blog www.communityfirstsaturdays.com
